India’s weightlifting queen Mirabai Chanu has won the country’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. She delivered a spectacular performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category, lifting a record-breaking total of 190kg. The 31-year-old Mirabai set new Commonwealth Games records by lifting 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. With this victory, she has secured a Commonwealth Games gold medal for the third consecutive time, having previously won gold in 2018 and 2022.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have congratulated Mirabai Chanu on her achievement. The President stated that she has demonstrated extraordinary courage, determination, and excellence. The Vice President praised her dedication, perseverance, and sustained excellence, while the Prime Minister described the victory as another glorious chapter in the history of Indian weightlifting, hailed her as a source of inspiration, and wished her continued success.
India also won two additional silver medals in weightlifting. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh secured second place and the silver medal in the men’s 60kg category by lifting a total of 264kg. He equaled the Commonwealth Games record by lifting 121kg in the snatch and subsequently lifted 143kg in the clean and jerk.
Raja Muthupandi won the silver medal in the men’s 65kg category with a combined lift of 286kg, comprising 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk. Malaysia’s Muhammad Aznil bin Bidin won the gold medal with a Games-record lift of 299kg.
India also made strides in boxing. Jadumani Singh advanced to the men’s 55kg quarter-finals after defeating Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman, while Preeti Pawar secured a spot in the women’s 54kg quarter-finals by beating Malawi’s Deborah Matenje.
India’s medal tally now stands at four, comprising one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. Para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar had opened the country’s account on the first day of the competition by winning a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight category.
